I wanna write a little bit about economic situation in Turkey. I wanna start by prefacing that I am by no means economy expert or I don't think Turkey has unique set of problems that no other country has. In fact, a lot of the world countries likely suffer from similar situations.
What I am going to talk about in this writing is going to be my personal opinions. Even though I try to carefully construct my opinions on reality, they are subject to change. I might list something as a problem in this writing and as soon as I start benefiting significantly from the current economic order, I might change my mind and say everything is fine and nothing needs to change. I, like every other human, am flexible like that. But that should not mean that you people need to believe me. In fact, if you think I am just some clown who exploited the system and got rich, you should change the system to create something better. So you should have strong sense of justice and equality and not get convinced easily by my self serving arguments. I might be asking a lot from you but at least you should aim to be that way.
I see and hear some people that say "Capitalism is fine." or "Capitalism is the best system we can come up with and we cannot meaninfully improve it.". Well if we can not improve it, we are doomed. By we I mean majority of people in capitalist countries. Because majority of those people are not doing fine in terms of their economic freedoms. Sure, most people are not dying from hunger or living in the streets, although some of them are. However they are not even remotely close to having as much wealth as some lucky minority. So, they are not dying, no thanks to you by the way, but they are living paycheck to paycheck, partially thanks to you. By you, I mean the order and the system and people who contribute to the system.
Currently, in Turkey, nearly %40 percent of working people earn minimum wage. At the same time, some minority, between 10 and 20 percent, earn tens of times more than minimum wage. That makes you think "Well, it can not be that perfect of a system if it produces such outcomes.". Some people hardly get by and others live in a luxury unimaginable to those who hardly get by. No that is not the perfect system at all. I am not saying, it is merely the result of economic order, although it is a big contributor. But whatever or whoever is the contributor, God, luck, biology, economy or whatever, well it is not working well. Like I said, this situation is not specific to Turkey either. In a lot of countries, wage gap is huge and it does not seem to be getting better. Majority is not happy with thier conditions whereas minority is perfectly fine. Somehow we are expected to believe that this is what is supposed to be and people should be happy with what they have. Well, I am not buying that and you should not either. You only have one life my friend and you do not need to be content with little you have, whereas some other greedy person out there somewhere has 30 times you have, partially with the help of you or people like you, and somehow wants more. This is not a fair game and it never was. Our families and ancestors have been convinced that they are worthless and should work for a penny. They were exploited and created this inequal society. But they still contributed to the goods of the society as well. So, you have a say so in the overall wealth of this order. Remember, the next time some kid whose parents were rich says to you that "My parents worked hard for this", your parents contributed to thier wealth as well, in some cases, when they should not have.
You might be one of those people who are inclined to say "Well, it is merit based, so if you are not making money that means you are useless and meritless.". If you are one of those people, I would like you to think about how someone gets money. It always includes interacting with other humans or human made systems. Therefore, if you are rich, that does not mean you poop gold or produce something out of nowhere, like some miracle maker or whatever. It means, you interacted with the economic system. For example you might have started a timber company and hired a bunch of people for minimum wage, well because you could, and added to your wealth that way. Or you might have started a web application, by using the free tools, such as coding languages, free websites etc. and internet, which is ready made for you meaning you did not come up with the whole infrastructure and how it works. So, rich people who have all these "merits" and make something valuable "out of nowhere", those people are using other people/systems made by others to add to their wealth. After a while, it gets a little old listening to them how they made their empire "from nothing". I mean, I would understand if something did not exist and nobody had access to it, you cannot clone yourself no matter how much you try or how much money you have. But if something, like food items, common technologies etc., are not available to some while others are buying 100s of pieces of those items, we can not talk about the fairness of the system, can we? Anyone with slightest bit of analytical skills would be able to see that, system does not produce fair outcomes therefore it is not fair. To the point of "getting rich from nothing", we do not live in stone ages anymore. So some neanderthal does not make his own hunting tool, go out and hunt a deer thanks to their merit. We have more interactive economic system now. So anytime anybody makes or gets something valuable, it is happening thanks to the involvement of other people, whether past or present.
What Is My Solution?
Some of the more solution oriented people out there might be thinking "Well you might have a point but what is the solution?". I don't have a direct solution. Direct solution would be a better system, but I am not that economically sharp. Surely system will improve in the future, thanks to the innovations of economists and others. Everything eventually ends up improving, meaning things will get better compared to past, so this "perfect" economy has to somehow improve and lead to better outcomes for the majority, surely. Another thing on the point of solution is that, if you want a solution, you have to come up with one yourself. I mean Messiah won't come and remove all the tyrants and fix all the problems. What you have to do personally is that you should pay a little more to your employees if you are an employer or do not work for the levels of money you find unacceptable if you are employee. You should not help someone build their wealth if you think they are an asshole. Otherwise, you will be doing the same thing that you resent your parents/ancestors for doing. If you think someone is greedy, don't contribute to what they do. I understand these things might be scary and risky to do. But, hey, you want better economic situation for everyone, right? This is what you have to.
